Amwene Etiang

Attended the University of Bristol and graduated in 2024, having held a Beacon Scholarship for 3 years. Amwene, from Uganda, is currently a pupil at Bowmans Kenya.

Amwene graduated with a First-Class Honours degree in Law, thanks to sustained dedication to her studies and ongoing revision of all modules. She achieved a First-Class in her dissertation on human rights due diligence and achieved the highest marks in the unit in Evidence, Jurisprudence and Law and Policy of the EU.

Amwene is a keen tennis player and in her spare time, volunteers with Tennis for All Uganda as a Board Member. She also coordinates a Saturday morning skills development programme for teenagers. This holistic programme aims to develop the whole student, and complements their education and tennis training with workshops on verbal and written communication and entrepreneurship.  Amwene’s other interests include reading and writing on her Substack.

Amwene is a natural communicator and influencer: she is a founding member of the Beacons Forever group on LinkedIn, posting regularly with informative and impactful articles to support the wider group; during her degree, she wrote articles for The Student Lawyer on the intersection of legal, societal and commercial issues such as the business of sports. At Bristol, she took on the role of Vice President of the University of Bristol Tennis Club.

Amwene is a committed volunteer and has worked on several pro bono cases with the Law Clinic, as well as sharing research and legal knowledge with those who need it. Her citizenship projects have focused on organising tennis holiday camps for children at home, and she has to continued with this project since graduating from university.

Beacon Workshop Participation

In Leadership Workshops, Amwene was a generous and articulate team member. Her contributions were resourceful and creative, and she would happily step up to lead a group.

Amwene’s 2023 Summer Beacon Citizen Project, was about organising a tennis and academic tutoring holiday club at East Kololo Primary School in Kampala.
