Collins Mgomella

20 years old, attending the University of Surrey, UK. Collins was awarded a Beacon Scholarship for University in June 2022, and a Beacon Scholarship for Schools in 2018.

Collins is studying towards a BSc in Biochemistry and after successful completion of his second year, is currently undertaking a placement year position as a Clinical Trial Assistant at the University of Surrey. He has also completed a placement as an IT Technician for the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam.

An accomplished violin player, Collins plays with the university’s String Society and practises independently. He attends the gym four times a week and includes running in his regime to improve his overall fitness. He plays for the Frisbee Team and has taken up mahjong and chess this year, challenging himself mentally and immersing himself into a new community.

Collins is on the committee for the African Caribbean Society and played a key role in organising a Black Tech event for young entrepreneurs from ethnic minorities. He is Course Rep and a member of the Biosoc Society, attending regular meetings, and has subsequently set up a successful study group with other members.

A committed member of the Surrey Volunteer platform, Collins has been a Student Aide and is also a Student Ambassador for the university, showing prospective students around.  

Beacon Workshop Participation

In Leadership Workshops, Collins is a confident participant who gives constructive feedback, and demonstrates initiative and camaraderie.

Collins’ 2023 Summer Beacon Citizenship Project was working with ‘Tumaini La Maisha’ and the Golden Summer Family to address the lack of awareness surrounding childhood cancer in Tanzania, including the organisation of a Remembrance Day to honour those who have lost their battle against cancer.
