Collins Mgomella

21 years old, attending the University of Surrey, UK.  Collins was awarded a Beacon Scholarship for University in June 2022, and a Beacon Scholarship for Schools in 2018. 

Collins is studying towards a BSc in Biochemistry. This year Collins completed a year in Industry at the Clinical Research Facility, where he expanded his knowledge of drug development and pharmacology, areas he is considering for his future career. He also completed an internship at UL Solutions. He gained valuable insights into the commercialisation of clinical trial facilities by interviewing staff from various departments and got involved with monthly staff team-building activities, as well as supporting the onboarding of other interns.

Collins has rebuilt his fitness with a consistent routine of working out 3-4 times a week and is enjoying a renewed focus on healthy lifestyle habits. He uses a bicycle for day-to-day transport between his accommodation and his work/studies.  He enjoys playing the violin and is preparing for a formal assessment.

Collins gets involved with many campus events and activities. He assisted the African and Caribbean Society committee elections and will be Events Manager for the East and South African Society for 25/26 and plans to run inclusive events to build a stronger student community.

Beacon Summer Citizenship Project

Collins’ Summer Citizenship Project was called ‘Empower Forward 2.0: The digital shift’ and focused on using technology and connections to prepare students for tertiary education.
