Gabriel Gekonge
21 years old, attending the University of Bristol, UK. Gabriel was awarded a Beacon Scholarship in June 2022.
Gabriel is studying towards a MEng in Aerospace Engineering and has successfully completed a year in industry at Dynisma, where he led a company-wide research and development project to deliver a cost-effective solution to a previously costly computer simulation. He achieved a First in his final placement report.
Gabriel enjoys a variety of activities to complement work and studies. He has a personal focus on fitness, health and wellbeing, which includes a routine of regular gym sessions, and good cooking and eating habits. He enjoys cycling and running with colleagues, and he also ran the Chew Valley 10k race as part of the Dynisma team. He enjoys playing the guitar in his free time.
Gabriel is an active presence in the communities he belongs to: he initiated and developed socials amongst Dynisma interns during his placement year, running group chats, dinners and game nights. He also organised a social gathering for other Bristol interns to share their experiences. As a member of Dynisma’s Wellbeing & Engagement Committee, he helped improve availability of outdoor seating and gym equipment for team members.
Gabriel is involved in a range of service activities, including mentoring internship applicants at Dynisma. He also volunteers with Community of Purpose’s ‘Break Free’ programme, providing holidays for disadvantaged children. As such, he accompanied them on farm visits, engaging the children with activities.
Beacon Workshop Participation
At Workshops, Gabriel is actively and positively engaged, demonstrating the ability to put across ideas in a persuasive manner, whilst also garnering the opinion of other members of the team.
Beacon Summer Citizenship Project
Gabriel’s Summer Citizenship Project was called ‘Nairobi AI Exploration Lab: Using AI to Solve Real-World Problems’ and focused on empowering participants in Nairobi to explore, learn, and build with AI tools.
