Neema Wandabwa

 19 years old, attending Cardiff University, UK. Neema was awarded a Beacon Scholarship in May 2023.

Neema is studying towards an LLB in Law. She has implemented a number of strategies to improve her study skills this year. Her consistent approach, attendance at writing classes and Legal Study Skills lectures, as well as forming a peer study group, have led to good 1st year results. She has also attended a range of courses which have developed her wider legal knowledge.

Neema has a good fitness routine, including being an active member of the Tennis Society, where she took part in charitable tournaments. As a member of the Equestrian Society, she overcame her fears and now hopes to join the team. She enjoys drama and supported behind the scenes and helped market Cardiff Uni drama productions. She is a proficient French speaker and has passed oral and written French exams.

Neema throws herself into networking opportunities and these have built her legal knowledge, developed her employability and communication skills and raised her awareness of issues beyond her course. She also ran for a number committee positions which improved her confidence and knowledge of campaigning.

Neema gets involved with a variety of volunteering roles. She successfully researched and attended the training required to take up Pro-Bono work and she also volunteers as a peer mentor with SAYDs – a non-profit organization that supports Kenyan young people to develop the skills to drive change in their communities.  

Workshop Participation

In Leadership Workshops Neema performs consistently well. She comes prepared, shows commitment and makes valuable contributions. She uses a variety of leadership styles and is a good listener.

As a new Beacon Scholar, Neema spoke about her experience of service to date, in particular her work supporting literacy and reading, and working to improve menstrual health, amongst disadvantaged communities in her locality.
