Ryan Nduma

23 years old, attending Imperial College London, UK.  Ryan was awarded a Beacon Scholarship for University in June 2022, and a Beacon Scholarship for Schools in June 2019.

Ryan is studying towards a BEng in Materials Science and Engineering. Alongside his studies, Ryan carries out research on AI modelling through a UROP; he co-authored a peer review paper, and earned a certificate in ‘Intro to Deep Learning’. He is exploring a startup idea which focuses on using AI to accelerate materials discovery, applying chemical design rules to facilitate efficient screening of chemical spaces and discovery of new materials.

Ryan maintains his fitness and good mental health with regular gym attendance, swimming and running.  He encouraged friends and colleagues to join him running by founding a running club. He enjoys hiking, and was proud to complete a trek along the East Coast Trail from Brighton. 

Ryan is an active presence in and around the engineering dept. He chaired a peer study group and acts as an academic mentor for the Imperial Global Summer School and two Kenyan students. He enjoys presenting and is speaking at the Psi-K ML/AI conference in Lausanne. He maintains strong ties with his fellow Beacon Scholars.

Ryan’s Citizenship activities include a platform, SignSpeak, which aims to break communication barriers for the deaf community by enabling real-time dialogue between sign and spoken language. He volunteers at City Harvest, redistributing surplus food to those in need and will continue this as part of his Summer Citizenship Project, aiming to recruit more volunteers.

Beacon Summer Citizenship Project

Ryan’s Summer Citizenship Project was called ‘Expanding Food Security Impact: From Warehouse to Community Ambassador at City Harvest UK’. As an Ambassador for City Harvest UK, Ryan is helping to address London’s food insecurity crisis as well as bridging the gap between food surplus and food poverty in London.
