Sharon Bowyer

17 years old, attending UWCEA, Moshi, Tanzania.  Sharon was awarded a Beacon Scholarship in May 2023.

Sharon has had a very successful start to her Diploma Programme. Highly driven, she displays an excellent attitude to her learning, works extremely hard employing a wide range of study strategies and maintains strong grades. She is particularly proud of her impressive progress in Spanish, especially as it is her first year studying the language.

Sharon plays U19 basketball and netball, coaches the U13 netball team, playing an essential part in team victories. She is a member of the Afro Dance Club, held a prominent role in the school play and was lead singer in the ensemble. She enjoys debate, participating in the Arusha MUN winning the Outstanding Delegate Award, and is learning to play the drums.

Demonstrating a strong commitment to wellbeing, Sharon organises numerous successful wellbeing initiatives throughout the year; she leads mentorship training through the Wellbeing Committee, and heads-up the peer counselling programme. She has also been re-elected as a Sustainability Committee member. She delivered a TED talk to the school, led a creative writing club and has tutored Swahili to DP students.

Sharon’s Citizenship activities are varied and impactful. She led the workshop development team for Imara Femme (a female empowerment initiative) and facilitated the project which successfully delivered four workshops to students at Moshi Tec Secondary School. She hosts a Cultural Café, which raises funds for the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre where she also supports patients with activities and provisions.

Beacon Summer Citizenship Project

Sharon’s Summer Citizenship Project was called ‘Fempower’ and focused on empowering the female entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
