Ryan Nduma
22 years old, attending Imperial College London, UK. Ryan was awarded a Beacon Scholarship for University in June 2022, and a Beacon Scholarship for Schools in June 2019.
Ryan is studying towards a BEng in Materials Science and Engineering. A committed student and passionate engineer, Ryan has attended all lectures, tutorials and workshops and is aiming for the highest grades in his final year. He has been awarded funding towards his UROP summer research internship at Imperial, exploring intermetallic materials.
A keen runner, Ryan completed the Brighton Marathon in just over 4 hours this year. He attends the gym three times a week, plays rugby and continues to learn Mandarin. He has been part of Imperial’s ‘Racing Green’ initiative, leading the development of bonding and layering techniques for carbon fibre components, to improve a vehicle’s structural integrity.
Ryan is Dorm RA, providing mentorship for first years, and the Events Officer for the Materials Department, organising a highly acclaimed dinner for a large group of fellow students. He has also been the Mechanical Lead for ‘Formula Students’ and a Student Ambassador for his department, actively participating in outreach events, and showing himself to be a committed Changemaker.
Working closely with others, Ryan has successfully fundraised for the British Heart Foundation, educating and involving his university community along the way. He is volunteering with City Harvest in London for his Beacon Summer Citizenship Project.
Beacon Workshop Participation
In Leadership Workshops, Ryan is a good leader, incorporating humour into tasks and encouraging younger members of his team. He is a strategist and manages a group well, ensuring even the more reserved feel comfortable participating.
Ryan’s Summer 2023 Beacon Citizenship Project was about ‘Using Technology and Open Educational Resources to Improve Learning Outcomes in Kenyan Schools – a model pioneered at St. Thomas Amagoro Girls, Busia, Kenya’.
