Nyawira Mburia

Attending University of Toronto, Canada, studying Physics and Astrophysics. Nyawira, from Kenya, was awarded a Beacon Scholarship in May 2016, and was a Beacon Scholar at secondary school for 5 years.

Nyawira is a keen musician, always in the school orchestra and choir, and a talented speaker who contributed well to school debate competitions.

Nyawira campaigned for and successfully gained the positions of Prefect and School Councillor at her school. She became Chair of the Community Services Committee, where she set up fundraisers and found donors; had to mediate between differing viewpoints; and had to convince her peers to participate and to think about the importance of giving back.

A passionate environmentalist, she has worked with PETCO to educate primary school children on greener use of plastics, including using recycled plastic waste for construction projects.

Nyawira was a positive and active participant at all Beacon events, engaging everyone with her lively and interesting presentations and debating style.
