Lemuel Mandara Mbaga

20 years old, attending the London School of Economics, UK. Lemuel was awarded a Beacon Scholarship for University in May 2023, and a Beacon Scholarship for Schools in 2011.

Lemuel is studying towards a BSc in Economic History.  He achieved outstanding marks in his modules in his first year, thanks to a systematic revision and study programme, including multiple ASK sessions, office sessions and seminars throughout the year. He gained a Spring Week internship at PWC, building on his growing employability credentials.

Lemuel plays the saxophone with a university jazz band, and generally practises improvisation and playing by ear. He endeavours to visit the gym at least three times a week and has seen positive gains by using an app to track his weights, regularly surpassing his PB.

Lemuel is the Events Officer for his halls committee, running some events solo and enrolling his peers to help in others, such as painting, museum trips, barbecues, social gatherings and sporting events. He regularly attends networking events and is proud to have been elected President of the Advancing Black Careers society for this year.

Actively involved in his community, Lem mentors young people in debating at a local school and is involved with an innovative ‘debate-box’ programme at a community centre, combining public speaking with boxing. He volunteers with the Black Cultural Archives group and also acts as a chaperone for younger children to attend interschool competitions.

Beacon Workshop Participation

In Leadership Workshops, Lemuel is an effectve communicator and can deliver a pitch powerfully. He participates well, is attentive to his group and is an effective coach. He gives insightful contributions and ideas.

For his 2023 Summer Beacon Citizenship Project, Lem carried out tutoring and a School Library Renovation at Msasani (B) Primary School, Dar Es Salaam, in collaboration with the Golden Summer Family.
