Module 15 of our Leadership Development Programme explored Career Building, highlighting the strategies needed to create meaningful and intentional career pathways.
Offering practical advice on developing your personal brand and approaching networking strategically, the M15 Module explored how to effectively communicate skills, strengths, and potential to future employers and how to lay the groundwork for ongoing success.
During the workshops, scholars took on the role of careers advisors, supporting a fictional young person to apply for a position and implementing strategies learned in the ARLLS leadership curriculum Moodle course such as writing the perfect Elevator Pitch, CV and LinkedIn page.
Participants shared their key takeaways and reflections from the course and workshop:
- I thought work was purely performance but in reality they are social ecosystems as much as they are technical.
- One thing this module reinforced for me is that your public profile is never really “done” – it needs to grow with you.
- Moving forward, I’m revamping my LinkedIn to highlight my unique work in environmental conservation rather than just sticking to generic titles. More importantly, at my next scholarship training camp, I’m ditching the “quiet worker” approach to focus on building ‘guanxi‘.
- Being authentic in how you approach and how you are perceived by people can go a long way.
- I learned that although it’s important to gain exposure and have many interactions, it is also important to consistently engage and create connections.
