The Trustees are pleased to announce three new UK universities have joined the Beacon Scholarship programme.

The Trustees are pleased to announce three new UK university partnerships to the Beacon Scholarship programme.

The University of Bristol, Cardiff University, and the University of Surrey have each agreed, in partnership with the Beacon, to offer up to one new scholarship to their undergraduate programme beginning in the academic year 2018/19.

The Beacon Scholarship for University has been operating in Kenya and the UK since 2013. Together with the Cambridge Trust (which offers The Beacon Scholarship at Cambridge) and the London School of Economics, the Beacon has to date awarded Beacon Scholarships for University to three outstanding Beacon Scholars from Kenya.

In 2016, The Beacon Scholarship for University was extended to students from Uganda and Tanzania, and since then three top Tanzanian schools have partnered with the Beacon to offer The Beacon Scholarship for Schools.

Following this expansion The Beacon Equity Trust is now able to offer up to 5 new undergraduate scholarships a year to students from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. To be eligible, applicants must:

  • be normally resident in Kenya, Tanzania or Uganda;
  • apply for their chosen undergraduate course to the university in the normal way and by the published deadline, and be offered admission;
  • demonstrate significant financial need, i.e. the inability to meet the costs of studying at a UK university;
  • demonstrate the potential to become leaders in their chosen fields and contribute to the future development of their home country.

Applications will be considered in any academic subject, except those for which the duration of the undergraduate degree course is longer than 4 years.

The Beacon and the University funding partner will contribute up to 66.67% of the total of the following costs in each year of the scholarship awarded:

  • university tuition fee at the overseas rate;
  • an annual stipend sufficient for a single person’s living costs;
  • one annual return economy airfare to the UK.

The remaining costs (i.e. 33.33%) must be paid by the parents/sponsors/guardians of the Scholar.
