Muhammad Hussein
23 years old, attending Kings College, Cambridge, UK. Muhammad was awarded a Beacon Scholarship in May 2023.
Muhammad is studying towards a BA in Psychological and Behavioural Sciences. He is an engaged student, enjoying independent study and responding well to feedback from his supervisors. He is developing his research skills thanks to a UCL course on the ‘Ethics of Neurotechnology in Healthcare Intervention’.
Muhammad enjoys various fitness and sport-related activities, especially football. Other activities include the King’s College Cuppers tournament (an intercollegiate sporting competition) and hiking scenic locations around the UK.
Muhammad is active in the college society scene: he was elected to the position of General Secretary of the Cambridge East Africa Society where, as well as overseeing the society’s day-to-day operations, he helps organise events and projects including supporting the Ubuntu Outreach Program, which has successfully increased East African international student enrolment.
Muhammad uses his position as King’s College Student Union International Officer to support international students to navigate difficulties and help them integrate. He has collated an ‘Introduction to the NHS’ booklet and has organised social activities for prospective students and those remaining in the UK during the holiday periods.
Beacon Workshop Participation
In Beacon Workshops, Muhammad demonstrates active engagement; he challenges ideas constructively, asks critical questions and thinks outside the box.
Beacon Summer Citizenship Project
Muhammad’s Summer Citizenship Project was called ‘The Digital Confidence Club’ and focused on helping older adults in Kenya gain essential digital skills through free tech workshops held at local libraries and community centres.
