Scholar & Parent Feedback
Scholars and their parents are asked to provide feedback on their Scholarship Continuation Forms annually on how the Beacon Scholarship has helped them.
Here is recent feedback:
The Beacon School Scholarship
Beacon has provided me with many opportunities to develop my leadership skills. The various workshops we have had, not only helped me get out of my comfort zone but also helped me learn to work well with other leaders and learn from new mindsets and how to contribute effectively to a discussion.Beacon has also been a source of motivation for me, to push myself out of my comfort zone and to achieve more than what I have subconsciously marginalized as “enough”. Beacon has helped me stretch myself and learn new skills, as well as many things about myself.
The scholarship has been of value to not only our daughter but also the entire family! She has become very responsible
especially in taking her target sheet very serious; to me as a parent, it is a very good thing to witness as I see how
committed she has become.
Another important aspect that is clearly a positive impact of this scholarship, was the process of her choosing the
citizen project! I supported her in terms of inputs and what she should do, but for her, it was very clear that she would
want to do a citizen project that support her career aspiration as well – it was a very thrilling thing to observe and I
am glad she was happy with the option she chose.
The Beacon Scholarship has helped me develop my leadership skills through personal growth from the
workshops provided. These new lessons have presented numerous personal growth opportunities. I have also
learned to lead by example with my actions instead of leading through a title given to me. I have been positively
influenced to work alongside others to create change, rather than ordering others. I have also developed as a
changemaker in my community by bringing positive impact to my peers through my leadership roles.
I have watched our son transform into a confident young man, taking up leadership roles with
enthusiasm. During this year, he has done us proud by performing well academically, taking part in the school
production and various art and music events as well as participating actively in sports. He has bagged various
awards for these. Of note, in the annual speech day, he was the Master of Ceremony for the event and he carried
himself with a maturity that can only be instilled by a leadership program such as Beacon. We are proud of him and
grateful for the opportunity which is indeed shaping him into a leader wherever he is, in whatever capacity.
Having the Beacon scholarship has been more than a blessing. It has played an important role in shaping me
into the strong and independent leader that I am today. Through Beacon, I have not only grown as a leader but
as a person as well. This is important because, the more mature and emotionally intelligent I am as an
individual, the more effective I become as a leader.
This scholarship has helped our daughter in building her confidence and also in managing her time well (time management).
She has been able to do all the school assignments and at the same time do Beacon Projects without compromising
time of either part. The scholarship has also made her more disciplined and self-motivated.
The Beacon University Scholarship
From the Beacon workshops I have gained more insights into how people think, and how this should inform how
I lead. The tips from the emotional intelligence workshop on being mindful of people’s thoughts and
circumstances have been useful when chairing meetings and allocating tasks. Applying this knowledge in my
seminars, workshops and meetings has helped make me a more effective leader
Overall, the Beacon scholarship has instilled in our daughter great discipline, education and inspiration for her to grow as
a responsible, bright, mature and confident young lady, who is well equipped to play an important role in
advocating for just policies and legislation, as well as protection for the rights of the most vulnerable
The Beacon scholarship not only pushes me outside my comfort zone, but also provides an encouraging and
inspirational environment to take up leadership roles. The skills we learn through the seminars, workshops and
Barazas sufficiently prepare me for leadership roles in various settings and teams, learning to be adaptable and
use different styles effectively to deliver the best outcome with a driven and happy team. The older scholars are
also amazing role models, who consistently show us that we have a voice and we should take every opportunity
to step up and use our talents and abilities to make a difference
She knows what she wants to achieve as a Beacon scholar and has diligently worked towards achieving her
objectives, challenges notwithstanding. It is also amazing how she so efficiently juggles her responsibilities as a
student at Imperial College London, a Beacon scholar, a member of a community and still spares time to catch
up with her peers. I believe being able to maintain this balance is so critical in bringing up the whole person that
is envisaged in the Beacon Scholarship
The Beacon Scholarship has greatly boosted my confidence, for example through leading groups during
workshops. Receiving feedback has helped me to work on my weaknesses and leverage my strengths, for
example when campaigning during the recent society elections. It has improved my teamwork, communication
and organisational skills, for example through planning and running the barazas with my fellow Beacon
scholars
The scholarship has helped her to remain accountable and focused throughout the year, for example through
the target sheets. The workshops have helped her develop leadership skills such as teamwork, problem solving,
lateral thinking etc which could in the long run also be instrumental to her career development. Giving the
scholar an opportunity to plan the baraza with fellow scholars has also greatly improved her communication
skills and confidence. The seminars and peer to peer mentoring have developed her social network and enabled
her to learn from her peers. It has also encouraged her to continue giving back to her community through the
citizenship project every year.
