On 25 August 2012 we held our first ever Beacon Scholar Leadership Day at Peponi Secondary School, Nairobi. Mark Durston, the Headmaster at Peponi Secondary, presented the keynote speech on the theme ‘Ethical Leadership’. The speech was participatory, challenging, and thought-provoking. The morning was spent on target-setting and reflections, then each scholar reported on their summer citizenship activity (required as part of the Beacon Scholarship). In the afternoon, an outdoor adventure leadership training organisation, BlueSky, engaged the Scholars in various team-building activities. Parents were invited at the beginning and the end of the day for tea and coffee.
We also invited two scholars, who are supported by the Beacon Equity Trust, from Starehe Boys and Starehe Girls. Patrick Mutuku and Mary Mweru actively participated in activities, interacted well with other scholars and made a positive contribution to the day.
Our thanks to Peponi Secondary for offering facilities and refreshments, and to Mark Durston for kicking off the day with an inspiring speech; to Priscilla Jean-Louis and Melanie Blake, mentors to Beacon Scholars at St. Andrew’s, Turi and Peponi House Prep, for helping with Scholar groups; and to BlueSky for the team-building activities.
