Senior Beacon Scholars attended the third Beacon Seminar on Mentoring.
The third Seminar on Mentoring was held for Senior Beacon Scholars on Saturday 19 November 2022.
The Seminar Series was developed to help Beacon Scholars understand and navigate their respective roles as Mentors and Mentees whilst being supported through their leadership training. The Beacon high-touch mentoring relationships include Peer-to-Peer mentoring on Target Sheets; ‘Buddy’ support for new Scholars; Home and Away Country Mentors for University Scholars; School Mentors for Schools Scholars; and Target Sheet Mentors for all Scholars.
Scholars were first given the opportunity to review Mentoring concepts from previous Seminars Mentoring 1 and Mentoring 2. After a short recap, Mentoring 3 focused on Coaching as a leadership approach and covered:
- The differences and overlap between Mentoring and Coaching
- Skills for Coaching
- Coaching Styles
- The GROW Model
Here are a few slides from the presentation. As always, the session included lively discussions and sharing of insightful and relatable personal experiences by Scholars; these were captured on Google Jamboard and via the Zoom ‘Chat’, and culminated in an improv roleplay exercise by two Scholars demonstrating the key principles of a coach-coachee relationship.
