University Scholarship Launched – January 2014

Scholarship for University

New undergraduate scholarship launched at the University of Cambridge and The London School of Economics and Political Science.

The Trustees are pleased to announce that agreements have been signed to offer the Beacon Scholarship at the University of Cambridge and at The London School of Economics on a trial basis for three years starting in September 2015.

The Beacon Scholarship for University will enable one outstanding student from Kenya, who has financial need, to attain a first degree at one of these world class universities. One new scholarship may be awarded for each academic year.

To be eligible applicants must be normally resident in Kenya; apply to the universities in the normal way and by the published deadline, and be offered admission; demonstrate significant financial need, i.e. inability to meet the costs of study; and finally, demonstrate the potential to become leaders in their chosen fields and contribute to the future development of their home country. Applications will be considered in any academic subject, except those for which the duration of the degree course is longer than 4 years. The costs will be split in the usual Beacon way i.e. parents 1/3, BET 1/3, University 1/3 and will include tuition fees at the overseas rate, approved university fees, an annual stipend sufficient for a single person, and one annual return economy airfare between Kenya and the UK.

The Trustees will be visiting top schools in Kenya in early February to explain the new scholarship, as well as meeting current Beacon Scholars and their parents to inform them of all the details.
