Ebenezer Laltaika

16 years old, attending UWC East Africa, Arusha, Tanzania. Ebenezer was awarded a Beacon Scholarship in June 2021.

Ebenezer sets himself the highest targets in his IB Diploma, particularly excelling in Visual Arts, Mathematics, and Individuals & Society. He is a reflective learner, always looking for opportunities and methods to refine his study methods and improve his grades; he is the embodiment of great IB learner attributes.

Ebenezer is a high achiever in many co-curricular areas: he was proud to represent Tanzania at the FIBA Africa U18 basketball championship, as well as representing his school basketball team; he has a talent for athletics, particularly in the jump disciplines, and his skill in Visual Arts resulted in one of his pieces being successfully auctioned. He has also held the position of Captain of the debate club.

Ebenezer continues to flex his social influence skills and be an important role model at school. A highlight for Ebenezer was his appointment as East Africa’s first Manta Trust Ocean Ambassador. He is a consistently active member of the House Council and contributes to a wide range of school clubs and teams. He has also been appointed Swim Captain for the UWC Arusha Rhinos.

Ebenezer personifies hands-on involvement in his community: his role as an Ocean Ambassador is enabling him to conduct a marine biology conservation programme as part of his Beacon Summer Citizenship project; he ran a successful ‘Hoops for Hope’ fundraiser to support improving conditions at a nearby school, and he continues to show strong environmental engagement.
