Ebenezer Laltaika

17 years old, attending UWC East Africa, Arusha, Tanzania.  Ebenezer was awarded a Beacon Scholarship in June 2021.

Eben is committed to achieving the highest IB scores, and his chosen HL subjects of Economics, English and Swahili reflect his strong interest in humanities and social sciences. He is recognised as an engaged, active and respectful participant in discussions, asking insightful questions to improve understanding. He was proud to be chosen to represent UWCEA at the UWCAD Short Course in Italy this summer.  

A talented and passionate sportsman, Eben’s proudest achievement this year was representing the U18 Tanzanian Basketball team. He works hard on his skills and techniques, understanding the importance of good team chemistry. He was proud to be selected for a week-long training camp with coaches from the Spanish national league. 

A keen debater, Eben used his influence at school to revive the UWCEA Arusha Campus Debate Club, and under his leadership, the club have achieved podium places in several competitions. He also leverages connections with other Beacon Scholars to jointly run movie nights and other events at the local KCEM Education Centre. His social influence at school enables him to take people with him, evidenced by initiatives such as tree-planting around campus. 

Eben is involved in numerous community initiatives including beach clean-ups, tree planting and equipment drives at a local education centre. His environmental passion led him to connect with Green Wheels Tanzania, and he is working to raise awareness of the environmental benefits of electric vehicles.

In Workshops Eben is noted as bringing impactful ideas and strategies, showing proactive engagement with his team and leading with intention.

Beacon Summer Citizenship Project

Ebenezer’s 2025 Sumemr Citizenship Project was ‘EcoCycles: A Sustainable Future Powered by the Circular Economy‘ where he researched and shared the potential that sustainable management can have economically, environmentally, and socially.
