Megan Kamau

17 years old, attending St. Andrew’s School, Turi, Kenya.  Megan was awarded a Beacon Scholarship in June 2021.

Megan is a dedicated and high achieving scholar who demonstrates discipline and passion in her A-level studies, consistently earning top effort and achievement awards in Sociology and History. She is currently undertaking academic exploration through her Extended Project Qualification, researching and writing a dissertation on the geopolitical considerations of lunar mining.

Megan plays violin in the school Orchestra and took part in the Grand Orchestral Weekend learning special pieces for her school. She is a member of the swimming squad and attends regular practice sessions to improve her times. Megan also runs and attends the gym, achieving gold when competing during sports day. 

Representing her school in the EAMUN conference, Megan was named best speaker in three of her individual debates. She is Chair of the Scholars Committee and a leading member of the National English Honours Society, organising events and mentoring younger students to help foster a love of literature and writing. She has re-established weekly meetings and is facilitating an African themed bookfair. 

Megan is head of the school Charity Committee and organised a successful fundraising event for Turi grounds staff, leading two large charity events including a ‘frugal lunch’ where students were encouraged to donate a portion of their lunch money. She is working towards the Turi Leadership Award and is building closer ties with the community though a self-sufficiency project with Chazon Africa.

In Workshops, Megan is confident and creative, offering valuable contributions and contextual reflections. 

Beacon Summer Citizenship Project

Megan’s Summer Citizenship Project built on last year’s work at Mukuru Community Centre School in Nairobi, and aimed to deepen and expand the teaching of study skills to students in classes 7 and 8.
