Irene Githatu
Attending the University of Birmingham in Dubai, studying for a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Irene, from Kenya, was awarded a Beacon Scholarship in May 2019, and was a Beacon Scholar at secondary school for 4 years.
At school, Irene enjoyed netball and was the goalkeeper for the school team. She was an active member of the choir and orchestra, playing the violin and leading the string ensemble.
Always keen to support younger pupils, Irene played an important role mentoring year 7s in her final year at school and was also part of a peer counselling team set up to support students at her school.
Irene is a longtime supporter of the Israel Faith Children’s Home in Nakuru and this year has raised money to support the children’s literacy by providing funds for their library membership. She also runs book and food drives which further support the children.
In Beacon Workshops, Irene showed herself to be a strong communicator, an effective mentor and a good motivator of teams.
